“Try it, you’ll like it!”
My sister and I were both in early elementary school when my cousins discovered that my sister did not like chocolate. These two cousins, both older and wiser, decided this chocolate aversion was not OK – it must be stopped!
They began efforts to induce their younger cousin to try one of the thin, waxy, brown bars of Hershey’s finest. Initially, my sister refused, but with continued pressure from her beloved, respected cousins she ultimately relented and took a bite.
That’s all it took. One bite.
She was reformed and from that moment on she was reborn a chocolate lover. I’m not sure today if she thanks them for this transformation, or not.
“Taste and see that the Lord is good.”
Psalm 34:8
I wonder why it is that when we seek to introduce someone to God we don’t use the tasting technique? I’ve noticed the tendency to use knowledge and reason – intellectual debates – to prove God.
I believe that once you’ve tasted the goodness of God – no argument is required. He is really good. Truly, mind boggling beyond compare for giving us the good stuff in life.
Got peace? (check) Got joy? (check) Got mercy? (check) Got wisdom? (check) Got love. (check) Got kindness? (check) Got compassion? (check) Got life, breath, and everything else? (check)
That’s what God tastes like! All. The Good. Stuff.
It just takes one bite.
I believe God can hold up to the scrutiny of the Taste Test.
God’s flavor comes out – His nature is clearly discernible.
People, too, have certain flavors. I think most of us know someone who leaves you with a bitter taste after you’ve been with them. The same goes for sweetness – and there are all kinds of sweet – you have the ultra sweet Nutrasweet type person, then there is the naturally sweetened type. Jesus said it well:
“Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.”
– Matt 12:33
Our fruit is made known – our character shown. Taste testing makes sense to me – a type of ‘try it you’ll like it’ philosophy.
When we taste something – we allow it into our very core – allow it to process and digest – and see how we feel. Are we satisfied, or did it hit our stomachs like a brick or leave with a wave of nausea? The bread of life – God – fully satisfies, being with Him leaves no hunger or thirst.
So, let’s taste and see.
I think our senses speak to the glory of God. A hard concept to grasp or intellectualize, but we can taste it. Goodness. Pure and simple goodness.
Try God. Taste of His truth. Try out His promises. Ask Him to show Himself. He will do it. And, it will be good!
Taste and see that the Lord is good.
Lord, show me Your goodness this day. I invite You to the table of my heart, I want to know You more and taste of Your glory.
**I hope this read makes you smile because sometimes I prefer a light hearted approach. It may be this theme stems from seeing one too many chocolate bunnies or Dove dark chocolate eggs walking down the seasonal aisle at my grocery store. Whatever the case, I hope the sight of chocolate bunnies reminds you to taste and see the goodness of the Lord this season….
